ABOUT US
Our History
In 2009, while hosting a classical music program for Colorado Public Radio, Steve Blatt saw a disconnect: breathtaking music was being celebrated on air while budget cuts were reducing or eliminating funding to school arts programs. He had an idea—why not invite listeners to share their love of music in a tangible way?
That year, the first instrument drive was launched, collecting 110 gently used band and orchestra instruments that were refurbished and given to students in schools with underfunded music programs.
Since then, Bringing Music to Life has awarded more than 8,700 instruments to over 330 school music programs, impacting 20,000+ students across Colorado. Donors give more than just instruments—they pass down a sense of belonging, pride, and joy. Many tuck heartfelt notes inside instrument cases, offering encouragement to the young musicians who will bring their cherished instruments back to life.
THE Mission:
Providing every Colorado child access to the life-changing experience of making music.

We measure our success by the number of students who can participate in band and orchestra programs—opportunities they wouldn’t have without access to instruments.
Each year, our Instrument Drive collects hundreds of instruments, which are repaired and returned to excellent playable condition. Because they are given to schools rather than individuals, each instrument can impact students for 8 to 10 years, carrying forward the gift of music for generations.
